Norfolk Commemorates Arbor Day With Tree Planting

NORFOLK - The City of Norfolk celebrated Arbor Day on Friday by planting a tree northeast of the city office building at 309 North 5th Street.  The ceremony was coordinated by members of the Norfolk Tree Advisory Board. Mayor Sue Fuchtman says the group works hard to make the community more aware of the importance of trees.  Tree Board member Jessica Jasnoch, store manager for the Earl May Garden Center said picking a site for a tree is the first step – not too close to buildings, overhead wires or other trees. And she says you need to be aware of what is underneath the ground, too.  The tree planted was a northern red oak, a variety Jasnoch says should do well in the Norfolk area.
