Norfolk, Hadar Firefighters Battle Apartment Blaze
NORFOLK - Norfolk and Hadar firefighters battled an apartment-house fire late Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters were dispatched just before 6 o’clock, to 1004 Koenigstein Avenue. First-arriving crews encountered heavy smoke and flames. Norfolk Fire Division Lieutenant Bob Nelson says it took 34 firefighters about 30 minutes to contain the blaze, and another three hours to overhaul the structure and extinguish it completely. A detached garage and fence were also damaged, while a home at 206 North 11th Street sustained smoke damage. James E. Treat owns the Koenigstein property. He and tenants to three apartments occupy it. Nelson says the property sustained approximately $60,000 in damage to the structure and another $40,000 in contents. The Norfolk Police, Salvation Army, NPPD, Black Hills Energy, the Water Department and American Red Cross assisted. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
