Norfolk Public Schools Receives Large Grant for After-School Programs

NORFOLK - Norfolk Public Schools has been awarded a $1.2 million 21st Century Learning Community Grant to help provide high-quality after-school programs for both the middle and junior high school students.  Sites will include both schools and The Zone, near the intersection of 4th Street and Norfolk Avenue.  Superintendent, Dr. Jami Jo Thompson says the school programs will focus on career readiness and academic skills, while The Zone will continue to concentrate on student empowerment and leadership skills.  Thompson says the goal is to serve 290 students, five-days-a-week during the school year, from the time school dismisses until 6 p.m.  She says limited programming will also be available during the summer.
