A person with knowledge of the details says All-Star power forward Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans have agreed on a five-year extension worth more than $140 million.  The 22-year-old Davis is entering the final season of a four-year contract he signed after being drafted first overall out of Kentucky in 2012.  He had until Oct. 31 to accept the offer or could have become a restricted free agent next offseason.  Davis averaged 24.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks this season.  The exact value of his extension can't be determined until the salary cap has been set next week.

Kawhi Leonard has agreed on the basic parameters of a deal to remain with the San Antonio Spurs.  A person with knowledge of the terms tells The Associated Press that Leonard agreed to a five-year contract that could be worth around $90 million.  The deal cannot be completed until July 9, per league rules.  Leonard was the MVP of the 2014 NBA Finals, averaged 16.5 points last season for the Spurs, and followed that up by averaging 20.3 points in San Antonio's seven-game playoff loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round.

Team USA is going to the Women's World Cup championship and seems to be peaking at the right time.  Carli Lloyd converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute and assisted on Kelley O'Hara's first international goal late in the Americans' 2-0 victory over Germany in the semifinal in Montreal.  Goalkeeper Hope Solo recorded her fifth straight shutout before a crowd of 51,176 at Montreal's Olympic Stadium.  England and the defending Women's World Cup champion Japan play tonight for the right to play the Americans in Sunday's championship in Vancouver.

Not a good start yesterday for the American men.  31st ranked Jack Sock, a Lincoln, Nebraska native who was seeded at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, bowed out in the first round of Wimbledon, beaten 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 by 69th-ranked Sam Groth of Australia.  Sock and partner Vasek Pospisil, the reigning doubles champs at Wimbledon, defeated Groth and Sergiy Stakhovsky in a first-round match Monday, winning 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), 6-1.

News Briefs:

The Norfolk City Council plans to make a decision Monday night on whether or not to offer the City Auditorium to the YMCA. A town hall meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, followed immediately by a special council meeting to consider on first reading an ordinance that would transfer the auditorium to the Y.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts says the EPA's proposal to cut the corn ethanol mandate in the Renewable Fuel Standard is costing Nebraska jobs. Ricketts says he met with officials of the Danish company Novozymes during his trade mission to Europe. Novozymes is reconsidering plans to expand, perhaps in Nebraska, because of the EPA's RFS proposal.

A fiery crash late Tuesday afternoon closed portions of Highway 81 and Highway 98 for several hours. Norfolk firefighters responded to a call for mutual aid at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday for a tanker that had overturned and was on fire a mile south of Wee Town. Highway 81 north of Hadar, and Highway 98 into Pierce were closed. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office investigated the crash.

A 68-year-old Creighton woman was killed Monday when two boats collided below Gavins Point Dam on the Missouri River. Carolyn Neyens was a passenger in one of the boats. Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton is in charge of arrangements.

A Columbus man has pleaded no contest to manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of his grandmother in 2014. Sentencing for 20-year-old Chase Micklevitz was set for July 31st. Police say he stabbed his grandmother four times last summer with a kitchen knife.

A man who spent 30 years on Nebraska's death row for two cult murders died of complications from a rare cancer in his salivary glands. A death certificate lists the cause of death for Michael Ryan as "metastatic carcinoma of parotid gland origin." Ryan died May 24 at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution. He was convicted in the 1985 torture and killing of 25-year-old James Thimm at a farm near Rulo, where Ryan led a cult. He was also convicted of the beating death of 5-year-old Luce Stice, son of a cult member.

The asphalt county road that leads to the old Norfolk landfill will remain hard surfaced for now. A hearing was held at Tuesday's meeting of the Madison County Board to consider tearing up the asphalt and returning the road to gravel. Area residents testified that the road still carries a lot of truck traffic, and other roads in the area are not in good condition. Commissioners agreed to patch the road and keep it hard surfaced.

The 20th annual Dynamite Duo and the Sparklers concert will be this weekend in Norfolk. Director Carla Post says this year's concert will focus on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Concerts are scheduled Friday night at 7 and Saturday afternoon at 2 in the First Baptist Church, 404 West Benjamin Avenue. There is no charge to attend, but donations are accepted to help meet expenses.
