News Briefs:

A spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry says it appears the congressman's opposition to abortion motivated someone to send a so-called glitter bomb to his Lincoln office. She says no one was hurt in the Wednesday prank, except some staffers now have sparkles on their clothes. The glitter-filled envelope was reported to Lincoln police, the U.S. postal inspector and the FBI. A note was included in the envelope that read: "Congrats, you've earned this for trying to deny women their right to choice. Mind your own uterus." Lincoln police say the letter doesn't appear threatening, but investigators will analyze it for fingerprints. Fortenberry recently supported a House of Representatives effort to prohibit federal funding for abortions. He said people are free to disagree with him.

Awards were presented Monday night to three members of the Norfolk Water Division for their assistance in restoring water service in Pilger last June after an EF4 tornado destroyed about 60-percent of the village. Rick Koenig with the Department of Health and Human Services Drinking Water Program presented awards to Norfolk Water Plant Supervisor Chad Roberts and utility workers David Hasebrook and Ron Nitz. He said their help was invaluable after the disaster, because other water operators were the people with the expertise to deal with the situation. Norfolk belongs to the Nebraska Water Agency Resource Network, or NeWarn, a mutual aid agreement with 175 members across the state. Other communities providing manpower to deal with the Pilger water system disaster were Wisner and Madison.

The managers of Nebraska's biggest reservoir expect to be able to give farmers the full amount of irrigation water this year, but that forecast could still change this spring. Civil engineer Cory Steinke told the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District board that Lake McConaughy is in good shape at this stage and 77 percent full. But it's hard to predict how much water will flow into the lake this spring. Steinke says snowpack in the North Platte River basin is at 79 percent of normal while the South Platte basin's snowpack is above normal at 108 percent. Farmers served by the irrigation district are expecting up to 18 inches of water an acre during the growing season.

The spring Norfolk Community Theatre production, "The Sunshine Boys," opens Thursday night in the Cox Activities Center Theatre on the Northeast Community College campus. Lauren Afrank is the director for this production. She says "The Sunshine Boys" is the story of comedians Willie and Al, who worked together for 43 years before retiring 11 years ago - and now they have a chance to work together once again. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 tonight, tomorrow night and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Additional shows will be offered next week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the box office at 402-844-7360.
