The 8-3 Nebraska football has dropped out of both the AP and Coaches poll rankings after losing 28-24 to Minnesota on Saturday.  The Associated Press Top 25 has Florida State at number one followed by Alabama, Oregon, Mississippi State, and Baylor.  The College Football Playoff selection committee will update their weekly Top 25 tomorrow.

Isaiah Zierden scored 20 points to lead Creighton over NC Central 65-45 yesterday.  Zierden was 4-7 from three-point range and also collected two steals.  Devin Brooks added twelve points and two steals while the Bluejays were 22-25 from the free-throw line as a team.  Creighton led by just five points at halftime 27-22, after both teams struggled offensively.  The Bluejays are now 4-0 while NC Central drops to 1-2.

The twelfth seeded Creighton men’s soccer team edged visiting Oregon State 1-0 in an NCAA Men’s Soccer Second Round match at Morrison Stadium yesterday.  After a scoreless first half, Bluejay freshman Lucas Stauffer scored in the 50th minute to put his team ahead for good.  Junior Connor Sparrow played all 90 minutes in net while making one save for Creighton.  The Bluejays are now 15-3-2 and advance to the third round of the tournament on Sunday when they host Xavier at 1:00 for the right to advance to an NCAA Quarterfinal match.

A Norfolk girl has been crowned Miss Nebraska Teen USA. Paige Pflueger earned the title Sunday night at the Rose Theater in Omaha. Paige’s mother, Paula Pflueger is a former Miss Nebraska.

A coalition of fathers and family-law attorneys will again ask lawmakers to change Nebraska's parental custody laws, which they argue are unfair to men. Lawmakers have introduced bills several times in recent years, but none have made it out of committee. With 18 new senators taking office in January, supporters are hopeful they can win enough support to change the law. A December study by the Nebraska State Court Administrator's office found that noncustodial parents - usually fathers - are given an average of five days a month with their children. The state reviewed divorce and child custody cases between 2002 and 2012.

Gov. Dave Heineman is in the final five weeks of his administration and says the transition process with Governor-Elect Pete Ricketts began two days after the Nov. 4th election. Gov. Heineman told News Talk WJAG’s Matt Storm that the governor-elect has to be ready to go Jan. 8th. "We've talked about everything from the budget, the personnel actions that you need to put together, all the policies that you need to become familiar with, what your legislative agenda is going to be," said Heineman. Ricketts will become the first new Nebraska governor in 10 years. Then-Lt. Governor Heineman became governor in January of 2005 when then-Gov. Mike Johanns was tapped by Pres. George W. Bush as Sec. of Agriculture. Heineman won gubernatorial elections in 2006 and 2010. He was not able to run for re-election this year because of term limits.

For the 10th consecutive year, the Norfolk Water Pollution Control staff has won the Scott Wilbur Award for the Nebraska Water Environment Association. City Wastewater Superintendent Todd Boling says his secret is pretty simple: "Basically good staff, good city recognition on bonding and council backing us up with all the budgets to meet permit limits and safety matters," said Boling. The Water Pollution Control staff was also awarded a safety award for excellence in accident prevention. Boling accepted the awards on behalf of the WPC staff earlier this month at the annual Nebraska Water Environment Association Conference in Kearney.

Northeast Nebraska’s economy got a boost as two area men have won big Nebraska Lottery checks last week. Thursday, Donald Diediker of Laurel won a little more than $22,000 playing the lottery’s 2-by-2 game. Then the next day, Michael Salmons of Pilger won $30,000 playing the $5 scratch game “Fun Fives." According to a Nebraska Lottery press release, the odds of winning 2-by-2 are 1 in 105,600 and the odds of winning the top prize of $1.2 million in “Fun Fives” is 1 in 120,000.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is releasing rooster pheasants in nine wildlife management areas in time for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Two of the nine areas are in Northeast Nebraska: Oak Valley north of Battle Creek and Wilkinson north of Platte Center. The pheasant season runs through Jan. 31.
