Southern California cornerback Josh Shaw has been suspended by the team after admitting he lied to school officials about how he sprained his ankles last weekend, retracting his story about jumping off a balcony to save his drowning nephew.  The school didn't explain how Shaw actually was injured in its statement, but USC officials say they regret posting a story lauding Shaw's tale on their website Monday.  Shaw is a fifth-year senior, a team captain and a key starter in USC's defensive secondary.

Clayton Kershaw is the majors' first 16-game winner after allowing no earned runs and six hits while striking out ten in eight innings of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 3-1 triumph at Arizona.  Matt Kemp hit a two-run double and Scott Van Slyke added a solo homer to help Kershaw improve to 16-3.

Lincoln’s Seacrest Field is getting a $4.5 million facelift.  The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the 52 year-old stadium will get the fix-up due to erosion under the bleachers.  Lincoln Public Schools are planning the biggest renovation of the stadium since it was built in 1962.  Work will not start until November after the football season has concluded.  The old, sagging bleachers and cracked stairs will come out.  There will be a new press box, double the size of the current one, the gravel parking lots will be paved and the new bleachers will be situated so the field grows by three feet on each side allowing for a regulation-sized soccer field.  Donations and a $153 million bond issue are the contributors to the renovation.

When the call came from an officer who needed help facing an armed robber at a fast-food restaurant, two members of a reality television show riding along with Omaha police hustled to record the confrontation. Within minutes, one crew member was dying from a bullet shot by an officer. Thirty-eight-year-old Bryce Dion of Boston was the audio supervisor for "Cops." He's the first crew member of the long-running TV show ever killed while filming police in action. Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer says Dion's death was a tragedy, but that police acted properly. The shooting also killed the robbery suspect, 32-year-old Cortez Washington.

Madison County Clerk Nancy Scheer has some good news for the county’s property owners. At Tuesday’s meeting of the board of commissioners, Scheer reported to the board that the certified property valuations increased by 15 percent over the last year, which resulted in a reduction the tax levy by seven cents per 100 dollars of valuation. Scheer says the county is requesting $12.27 million this year compared with $12.78 million last year, a reduction of four percent. The commissioners will hold a public hearing on the fiscal year 2015 budget Tuesday, September 9th.

An attempt to invalidate a ballot measure that would allow electronic betting on old horse races is now in the hands of the Nebraska Supreme Court. An attorney for anti-gambling activist Pat Loontjer asked the court Wednesday to keep the measure off the November ballot, while a state attorney defended it as constitutional. Loontjer's attorney, Steve Grasz, says the measure forces voters to cast a ballot on separate issues - whether to allow the machines and how the money is spent. Assistant attorney general L. Jay Bartel notes that the secretary of state's office reviewed and approved the language.
