News Briefs:

The Nebraska State Patrol says three people were killed and five others were injured in a two-vehicle collision near Cozad. The State Patrol says a vehicle traveling westbound on Interstate 80 crossed the median and struck an eastbound vehicle around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The three people killed in the crash were pronounced dead at the scene.  Authorities say a helicopter flew two people to a Kearney hospital. Three others were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Their conditions weren't immediately known. Eastbound lanes were closed for several hours Wednesday as authorities investigated the crash and cleared the road.

Another hurdle has been cleared toward a housing development in Norfolk that is expected to provide 53 new single-family homes.  Norfolk's Community Development Agency, at its meeting Wednesday, forwarded the McIntosh Family Redevelopment Plan to the full city council for a hearing. The proposed project is located south of Benjamin Ave., east of the current Meadow Ridge development. The plan calls for Tax Increment Financing, which provides added property tax revenue to finance construction of sewer and other infrastructure. A hearing on the project will be held Monday night during the regular meeting of the Mayor and City Council.

Nebraska Lawmakers are taking a new approach after two previous attempts to expand Medicaid failed. Sen. Kathy Campbell presented her Medicaid "redesign" bill to a committee Wednesday. It would require the state to apply for a federal waiver to develop its own Medicaid plan, as other states have done. Residents who fall into the coverage gap would be pulled into the current Medicaid program until the federal waiver is approved. Administrators in Gov. Pete Ricketts' administration opposed the bill, saying it relies on promises from the federal government.

In order for zoning laws to be effective, they must have teeth. But the question facing Madison County Attorney Joe Smith is just how painful the bite should be. Smith met with the Madison County Board this week to discuss two lawsuits involving Hemmer Land LLC. The Hemmer brothers have a grain bin in the southwest part of the county that was constructed without a building permit, and it is located too close to the road. Smith told members of the board that fines total in excess of $420,000.  Smith was directed to calculate the costs to the county so far, including costs to investigate the matter and for litigation. Using that, he will make a recommendation to the board on just how much of the fine should be collected.

About 130 classic cars, pickups and motorcycles will be on display Saturday during the Norfolk Area Rod and Custom's 7th annual Cabin Fever Car Show.  Rod and Custom President Lyle Schwartz says they’ll be firing up a fuel dragster periodically throughout the day and you can win raffle prizes.  It's Saturday from 11 to 5:30 at Northeast Community College’s Chuck M. Pohlman Ag Complex. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2.50 for kids and children under 10 get in free.  The Cabin Fever Car Show is sponsored in part by NewsTalk WJAG, Lite Rock 97.5 and 106 Kix Country.
