Ndamukong Suh is ready to start training camp — and he said any uncertainty about his contract shouldn’t be a distraction. According to the Omaha World Herald, Suh said, “That’s what you’ve got agents for. They can take care of business, and just go from there.” Veterans reported to camp yesterday, and the Lions will practice today. Suh is entering the final season of his contract, and as always, the spotlight will be on the two-time All-Pro when he takes the field for Detroit.
The Baseball Hall of Fame has added six new members who have taken their place among the greats of the game. It was a big day for the Atlanta Braves, who saw former pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine enshrined along with longtime manager Bobby Cox. Those three were part of a dominating Braves era that saw the team win 14 straight division titles. Maddux and Glavine are 300-game winners and Cox is fourth on the all-time victory list. Number 3 on that list is Tony LaRussa, who has also been inducted along with fellow managing great Joe Torre. LaRussa is a four-time manager of the year who won 12 division titles, six pennants and three World Series. Torre is fifth on the managerial wins list and captured 10 division titles, six AL pennants and four World Series with the Yankees. Slugger Frank Thomas rounds out the class of 2014. He hit .301 with 521 homers and 1,704 RBIs in his 19-year career mostly with the White Sox.
Capturing his fifth Brickyard 400 victory title yesterday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago when he captured his first. The win moved Gordon into a tie with Michael Schumacher, who has five Formula One victories over the famed Indianapolis oval.
Carlos Santana hit two more home runs, giving him six in six games, and the Cleveland Indians beat Kansas City 10-3. That ends the Royals' winning streak at five. The Royals are now 5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central.

Wisner-Pilger middle school students lost their school in June when an EF4 tornado ripped through Pilger, destroying the 105-year-old building, along with much of the furniture and fixtures inside. The school has relocated to Wisner for the fall. Classes will be held in three modular buildings. Wisner-Pilger superintendent says the Sioux City school district has donated 70 desks as well as some other furniture and shelving. Boyer says the furniture will be delivered today, free of charge by students in the Western Iowa Tech truck-driving program, and a dozen members of the Sioux City East football team will come along to help move it.
Nebraska prison officials say the errors made in calculating sentences for hundreds of inmates will cost the state at least $4 million, but at least one lawmaker says the cost is likely to be higher. The state Department of Correctional Services miscalculated sentences of nearly 600 prisoners. The Omaha World-Herald reported that the state was using a flawed formula in cases involving mandatory minimum sentences. Officials estimate that correcting the sentences will cost the state about $4 million over the next decade and as much as $10 million through 2064. But Omaha state Sen. Heath Mello, who leads the Appropriations Committee, says he thinks officials are understating the costs.
Omaha State Sen. Jeremy Nordquist is working on legislation that would allow certain illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses in Nebraska. Nordquist says it falls directly under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and applies to only those who were here June 15, 2012. Nordquist says the majority of both houses in Congress support doing something for these individuals that were brought into the country as children. He maintains that as long they’ve been responsible residents of our state and not involved in the criminal justice system this is not an unreasonable request.
Gov. Dave Heineman signed LB 476 into law a little more than a year ago, creating a program called Intern Nebraska that the governor says is already a great success. Heineman told NewsTalk WJAG that for every new internship a business creates for a college student, the state will pay for half of it. Heineman said about 700 students took part this past school year and about half received job offers from the companies they worked for following graduation The law stipulates that half of the internships have to occur in rural Nebraska: outside Douglas, Sarpy and Lancaster counties. For more information, go to the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s web site, neded.org.
One month can make a big difference. National Drought Mitigation Center Climatologist Brian Fuchs says heavy rains in June ended the drought for nearly all of Nebraska. Fuchs says the state entered into drought in the dry and hot summer of 2012. Drought carried over into 2013 and didn't seem to be nearing an end as 2013 turned into 2014. But Fuchs says the storms in June that left a lot of damage in their wake also ended the drought, dumping enough rain on Nebraska to recharge depleted subsoil moisture. He says only a portion of southwestern and north-central Nebraska remain in moderate drought.
We read in the Bible that the very hairs on our heads are numbered, and in his case, each year it gets easier for the Lord to take inventory.
