News Briefs:

A vacant Norfolk hotel damaged by fire nearly two years ago will soon be torn down. The owner of the Budget Inn Hotel at 721 East Norfolk Ave. has withdrawn an appeal to the Property Maintenance Board of Appeals over the demolition of the building.  Norfolk City Attorney Clint Schukei says the owner, Mota AmBaji, Inc. has indicated that the south section of the building will be torn down in mid-October following asbestos removal.  The city has given Mota AmBaji until November 1st to complete demolition of the north, fire-damaged part of the structure.

Norfolk 1st Ward voters will have a choice between two candidates to represent them on the Norfolk City Council.  Madison County Clerk Nancy Scheer reports that Dan Spray has turned in enough valid signatures of registered Ward 1 voters to put his name on the November 4th General Election Ballot.  Earlier, Cory Granquist submitted enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. The unusual situation was created in June when incumbent First Ward Councilman Dale Coy resigned.  Coy was the only candidate for the position in the May Primary Election, and asked to have his name removed from the November ballot.

The last holiday weekend of summer is just ahead and more Nebraskans are expected to be on the road this Labor Day compared to last year. Most people who are taking trips for the holiday will be traveling by car, about 86 percent, according to AAA Nebraska's survey. In Nebraska, gas prices are below the national average. Prices in the state are now averaging $3.39, down 17 cents from a year ago. Prices in Norfolk are averaging around $3.25 a gallon.

A November trial has been scheduled for two Northeast Nebraskans accused of cattle theft.  Twenty-seven-year-old Benjamin Johnson, of St. Edward, and 23-year-old Rebecca Robbins, of Lyons, have pleaded not guilty to three felony charges facing each. Their trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 17.  Johnson and Robbins are accused of selling about $100,000 worth of cattle taken from a Brunswick farm. The livestock has since been returned.

Nebraska state officials are advising residents to prepare for emergencies and natural disasters before they hit. Gov. Dave Heineman says residents should create disaster supply kits and take steps so they can care for family members for up to 72 hours. The governor has declared September as Nebraska Preparedness Month.  Maj. Gen. Daryl Bohac, adjutant general of the Nebraska National Guard, says preparation is important given the tornadoes, floods and fires that have struck the state in the last few years.

The man painting the Johnny Carson mural on the east wall of La Macarena, on the southwest corner of 3rd Street and Norfolk Avenue is ready to get back to work. Artist Karl Reeder says he had to put the project on hold last June after he was diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer.  Doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. removed an eight-pound tumor, as well as the affected kidney.  Reeder had planned to resume work on the mural by now, but rains have postponed those plans until next week. Reeder says he hopes to have the mural finished by the end of the summer.

Today's Tickler:
