News Briefs:

A 24-year-old Stanton woman faces charges of first degree arson and making terroristic threats for an incident that occurred late last year in Norfolk.  Police Captain Mike Bauer says Johna Richards was arrested Wednesday after an investigation into a fire in the hallway of an apartment building at 304 South Hickory that was reported at 12:48 a.m. on the morning of December 29th. A man in the apartment building said he had received threatening messages on Facebook, and a search warrant for Facebook led officers to Richards.  Bauer says the suspect was contacted on April 4th, and arrested yesterday at the Norfolk Probation Office. Richards was taken to the Norfolk City Jail and later transferred to the Madison County Jail.

Authorities say an 8-year-old girl who was involved in a Fremont collision had been fatally injured at her home when a television fell on her head. The Fremont Police Department released autopsy results Thursday on the body of Eva Imus, who died March 25 at a hospital. She was already being rushed to the hospital by her brother when his car struck another. Fremont Police Chief Jeff Elliott says autopsy results show the girl died from head injuries. Elliott says Eva apparently was trying to open a dresser drawer when the old, tube-type television atop the dresser toppled forward onto her.

Landowners in the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District who can show good cause may be able to irrigate up to 35 new acres. At their meeting last night, the NRD Board of Directors approved amendments to the groundwater management area rules and regulations that establish an expedited variance process for good cause. The board also changed some due dates, and exempted wells that pump less than 50 gallons per minute from certification requirements.

The Norfolk City Council has approved an engineering contract with the JEO Consulting Group for a new vehicle storage building to be built at the Public Works Maintenance Site on South 8th Street. The 12,000 square foot building will cost approximately $850,000, with construction beginning later this year.

Eighteen Norfolk Senior High students helped take soil samples from an alfalfa field owned by the Norfolk Public Schools yesterday with the help of Farmers Pride in Battle Creek. The field is located just south of Westside Elementary on South 18th Street. The results of the soil tests will be used to make recommendations on the best use of the field.

The city of Tilden celebrated Earth Day earlier this week with U-S Department of Agriculture officials who announced a $3.6 million loan for the construction of a lagoon and improvements to the city’s lift station. The loan - to be repaid in 40 years – is part of the USDA’s Community Program, which provides money for housing, community facilities, businesses and infrastructure in rural communities.
