News Briefs:

A Columbus man faces up to 25 years in prison after admitting that he shot and killed his friend more than three years ago in Pierce. Twenty-four-year-old Daniel Hofmann entered a guilty plea Thursday morning in Pierce County District Court to manslaughter for shooting 18-year-old Wesley Kuester of Norfolk in April of 2011.  Hofmann says the two were drinking and playing with guns when he shot Kuester in the back of the head with what he thought was an unloaded shotgun.  Originally, Hofmann told authorities that Kuester shot himself, but a Sioux City medical examiner determined that the death was a homicide. Sentencing for Hofmann has been set for Dec.18th.

Madison County Clerk Nancy Scheer says that, even if you failed to update your registration before the October 24th deadline, you might still be able to vote Tuesday. Scheer says those voters who have moved within Madison County but failed to update their registration will be allowed to cast provisional ballots on Election Day. She says these voters need to go to the polling place associated with their current address, and should allow extra time to handle the paper work needed to vote provisionally.

Neither of the candidates seeking to be the next Nebraska State Auditor has an accounting background, but Democrat Amanda McGill says the job is more of a leadership position. While in Norfolk Thursday, McGill said she agrees with State Auditor Mike Foley’s investigation of agencies like Health and Human Services, and would be as tenacious at ferreting out waste as he's been. But she says, if elected, she'd do the job with fewer headlines. McGill faces Republican Charlie Janssen to replace Foley, who chose to run unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for governor, but was chosen by nominee Pete Ricketts to be his running mate.

As October comes to a close, the Norfolk Area United Way drive for 2015 is getting closer to its goal. United Way spokesman Candace Allen says another $63,000 in donations was reported this week, bringing the total collected so far to a little more than $371,000. That’s nearly 69% of the $540,000 goal. More than 20 agencies and organizations benefit from contributions to the Norfolk Area United Way. They provide a variety of services, from youth programs to senior citizen meals.

The Norfolk Senior High Music and Theater departments have teamed up to turn the Johnny Carson Theatre stage into the Austrian Alps. “The Sound of Music” will be performed this weekend. The Rogers and Hammerstein musical has been performed on stage, on the big screen and most recently as a live television event. Performances are scheduled Saturday night at 7, and Sunday afternoon at 2 at the Johnny Carson Theatre. Tickets are on sale at the door: $7 for adults and $5 for students.

Remember that hour of sleep you lost last spring? You'll finally get it back this weekend as Daylight Saving Time ends. The nation returns to Standard Time at 2 a.m. Sunday, but most of us will simply set our clocks BACK one hour before going to bed Saturday night.
