Nebraska Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst confirmed to The Omaha World Herald yesterday that the deals of men’s basketball coach Tim Miles and women’s basketball coach Connie Yori have been extended one year each through the 2019-2020 seasons.  There was no immediate comment about any change in salary.  Miles and Yori's extensions give each coach five years, which has become the industry standard as a way to counter negative recruiting.

News Briefs:

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts has vetoed a bill to abolish the death penalty in the state, sending it back to lawmakers who will attempt an override. Nebraska lawmakers passed the bill last week with a veto-proof, 32-15 majority. Ricketts has been talking to individual senators to try to weaken the support. But the lead sponsor, Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, has said he's confident the bill will maintain enough support for the override.

The Omaha police officer who lost her life last week in the line of duty loved what she did. The Rev. William Bond said at Kerrie Orozco's funeral Tuesday that she loved helping others and serving as a peacemaker. Orozco was shot to death last Wednesday by a fugitive who was fatally wounded by another officer. Bond says Orozco had strong faith and a habit of praying in her squad car as well as in church. Before her daughter, Olivia, was born prematurely in February, the original due date had been Tuesday. Instead, it became Orozco's funeral date.

A Columbus woman has died and four others have been injured after a car crash occurred in Rockport, Mo. Police say a family was driving southbound on Interstate 29 on Tuesday afternoon when their vehicle ran off the road into the median and rolled several times. According to authorities, the mother was ejected from the passenger side of the vehicle. Thirty-year-old Cristyna Pace was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say 34-year-old Jason Pace was taken in serious condition by life flight to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Mo. Two children sustained serious injuries and a third child had minor injuries. The children were transported to Nebraska Medical Center. The investigation of the crash is ongoing.

The Lincoln County sheriff says a diver has reached a car that carried two teenagers into the rushing waters of the South Platte River. But Sheriff Jerome Kramer said Tuesday that the car can't be recovered until the river recedes. Hydrologists say the river is expected to reach flood stage late Wednesday or early Thursday. Officials have said 17-year-old Alexis Wiezorek and 18-year-old Noah Ramos, both of North Platte, have been missing since May 18, when they drove into the river, which had washed out a road on the south side of North Platte. Kramer says the diver could see only silt inside the car but was able to remove a piece of the car's vinyl top, which allowed officials to confirm the car is the one driven by Wiezorek.

Nebraska lawmakers are one step closer to lifting the state's ban on hogs owned by meatpackers. The measure won first-round approval Tuesday on a 28-10 vote after supporters managed to overcome a filibuster. Opponents in the Legislature say the bill would allow major corporations, such as the Chinese-owned Smithfield Foods, to squeeze out small and independent farmers and control the supply chain. Sen. Ken Schilz of Ogallala says he introduced the bill to keep Nebraska's hog industry on pace with other states. Senators voted 34-9 to end the filibuster.
