News Briefs:

U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts says he's worried about growing partisanship in the judicial confirmation process and a public perception that the court is a political body. Roberts told an audience at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Friday that the current partisan atmosphere in Washington would make it unlikely for justices such as Antonin Scalia or Ruth Bader Ginsburg to win confirmation. Roberts said assigning cases is the best part of his job, and he tries to give each justice a mix of important cases and those he deemed "dogs."

Harvest season is here, which means many farm vehicles are sharing rural roads with the flow of rapidly moving traffic. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Educator Wayne Ohnesorg says that produces a safety issue for farmers and for motorists. Machinery making left turns is a leading cause of injury and deaths on country roads. Operators need to be cautious of oncoming traffic and vehicles behind them. This week is National Farm Safety and Health Week, a time for farm families to plan to be safe during harvest and all year long.

A new report by the Reason Foundation shows Nebraska's highway system ranks among the very best in the country, based on their condition and cost-effectiveness. The study's lead author, David Hartgen says a study of pavement conditions, bridges, traffic congestion and other factors ranks Nebraska's roads number-two in the country. Hartgen says Nebraska's budget for roads is very thin, but the state manages to stretch those dollars further and maintain an exceptional highway system. This year, the Cornhusker State ranked behind only Wyoming. Last year, it was South Dakota.

The Nebraska Corn Board is donating $2 million to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to create an endowed professorship. The donation will support a professor at the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources who will focus on corn and finding new uses for the crop. The money will support the professor's salary and an annual stipend for research. Similar positions focused on wheat and soybeans already exist. Farmer Tim Scheer, who leads the Corn Board, says developing more uses for corn will help ensure strong demand for the crop in the future.

Race fans returned last night to Riviera Raceway, the site of many Summer Saturday night memories for the final time. The engines roared as a packed grandstand watched and cheered the regions top stock car drivers, past and present. The checkered flag flew for the final time at the half-mile dirt oval on Sherwood Avenue. The night, was a tribute to one of Rivierea’s co-founders, Bob Haase. One hundred one drivers raced.  Haase's widow, Janet says her late husband would have been honored by the large turnout of drivers and race fans. The future of Norfolk stock car racing is uncertain. Kevin Signor is attempting to bring the sport to his Off Road Ranch southeast of Norfolk, but the Norfolk Planning Commission has yet to vote on the measure.
