Jason Dufner took the lead from Jim Furyk on the front nine and held on to win the PGA Championship at Oak Hill.  Dufner closed with a 2-under-par 68 for a 10-under in his first career major title, two strokes ahead of Furyk.  The victory comes two years after Dufner blew a four-shot lead with four shots to play at the PGA Championship in Atlanta.

Brett Gardner has bailed out Mariano Rivera once again.  Rivera blew a 4-2 lead before Gardner homered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift the New York Yankees over Detroit 5-4.  Gardner's blast came two days following his walkoff single in the tenth inning after Rivera coughed up a 3-1 lead.  Alex Rodriguez hit his first homer of the season for the Yankees, who took two of three from Detroit after the Tigers entered the series on a twelve-game winning streak.

Kyle Busch prevailed in a late race battle with Brad Keselowski to win the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen.  Busch held off Keselowski on a two-lap dash to the finish in the caution-filled race.  Keselowski finished second in this race a third straight time.  Busch took the lead just past the halfway point of the 90-lap race and he held on through a series of cautions over the final 29 laps.

Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher has a lot of new faces on hand including players and assistant coaches.  Most of the questions at media day yesterday involved the competition for the starting quarterback job between redshirt freshman Jameis Winston and redshirt sophomore Jacob Coker.  According to ESPN, Winston said yesterday “If I get [Johnny] 'Manziel disease,' I want every one of y'all to get your mics and just start [hitting me] on the head," he told reporters, adding that Manziel was a good person, based on what he'd heard from other athletes.  Florida State will face Pittsburgh in the opener on Sept. 2.

Jeremy Scott’s bid for an International Associations Athletic Federation World Championships pole vault medal came to an end after the former Norfolk High standout failed to qualify for the finals in Moscow, Russia last Saturday.  According to the Norfolk Daily News, competing in Group B, Scott cleared 5.25 (17-2¾) on his second attempt, cleared 5.40 meters (17 feet, 8½) on his first attempt before missing all three of his attempts at 5.55 meters.

News Briefs:

Authorities say an Omaha man has died after a train hit his sport utility vehicle near the eastern Nebraska city of Schuyler. A westbound Union Pacific train pulling loaded grain cars hit the SUV Saturday morning at a crossing just west of Schuyler. The Colfax County Attorney's Office identified the motorist as 47-year-old John Eastwood. He was pronounced dead at a Schuyler hospital about an hour after the crash. Initial reports were that the crossing gates, lights and bells were functioning properly.

Bids on the new applied technology training facility and physical plant at Northeast Community College came in a little lower than expected. At last week’s meeting, the college board of Governors accepted bids with a total of just under $14 million. The Applied Technology Training Facility will house the building construction, electrician, heating and air conditioning and electro-mechanical programs, with space also available in the future for green and wind energy classes. Samsung Construction is serving as the construction risk manager for the project. More than 80% of the subcontractors on the project will be Northeast Nebraska firms.

The City of O’Neill is providing a major financial boost toward a campaign to construct a new Northeast Community College extended campus in the community. Members of the O’Neill City Council voted unanimously last week to approve $750,000 over five years through the use of an extra half-cent in sales tax dollars in L-B 840 funds approved by voters in May of 2012. The proposed new O’Neill facility is to be located just west of the Farm Credit Services building on Highway 275.  The campaign has reached 50 percent of its goal with cash and pledges of more than $1.25 million.

The York County sheriff says one of his deputies wounded a man during an exchange of gunshots. Sheriff Dale Radcliff says the shooting occurred a little after 4 a.m. Sunday. Radcliff says the deputy spotted a vehicle driven by a man reportedly involved in a domestic dispute. The deputy chased the vehicle until it went into a ditch on the southwest side of York. The sheriff says the man got out of the vehicle, carrying a rifle, and fired twice at the deputy. Radcliff says the deputy then fired and hit the man twice. The deputy wasn't hit.  The man was taken to a Lincoln hospital.

Norfolk's water park, AquaVenture closes for the season this week. Wednesday will be the last weekday the park will be open. It will then reopen for the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 17th and 18th before closing for the summer. City Human Resources Director Sheila Schukei says attendance this year has not been as high as last year, largely because the weather has been cooler. She expects the final income figures will show enough to pay the staff and contribute at least some toward the maintenance costs of the facility, but probably not the surplus that was reported last year when temperatures frequently hit 100 degrees.  Families are asked to keep their season passes, which can be recharged next year.
