Another Northeast Nebraska crash has required the services of LifeNet Medical helicopter – the third in four days. Madison County Sheriff Vern Hjorth reports that Alfredo Reynaga was flown to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City following a one-car accident about 7 p.m. Monday night west of Norfolk. Hjorth says Reynaga was traveling west on 840th Road west of 49th Street when he lost control on a curve. His vehicle entered the ditch and struck a power pole. Emergency personnel from Battle Creek and Norfolk extricated Reynaga from the vehicle. On Friday night, two victims were flown from the scene of a crash in Stanton County. Sunday night, one victim was flown to Sioux City from a crash on the southeast edge of Norfolk.
Just how loud is loud? That was the question no one could answer yesterday at the meeting of the Norfolk Planning Commission. Commissioners discussed a requested conditional use permit that would allow Kevin Signor to operate a stock car track at the Off Road Ranch, 2900 Old Highway 8 southeast of Norfolk. One of the proposed conditions would set a decibel limit for the track, but there was no agreement on what that level should be or what measures should be taken to reduce the natural noise associated with a stock car track. Commissioner Bill Fisher moved to table the matter until more specific information is available on the site plan and noise abatement.
The first meeting of the Mayor's Diversity Discussion Group will be held Monday in the Elkhorn Lodge in Norfolk. The meeting is being called to discuss different points of view and minority perspectives in the Norfolk community. The issue came to light when a July 4th parade flat drew claims of racism in the community. Norfolk Mayor Sue Fuchtman invited minority members of the community to share their concerns with her. But she says neither she nor City Administrator Shane Weidner have received personal contact from anyone who claims to be the target of discrimination. Monday's meeting is not open to the public.
The Norfolk City Council is being asked to rescind a motion approving construction of a new hangar building at the Norfolk Regional Airport. At Monday night's meeting, Airport Authority member Dan Geary said he thought last month's decision had been rushed, and that the Airport Authority needs to study the issue and make any decision based on hard data. Geary said council members asked good questions that needed to be answered. He also said the Airport Authority would change its bookkeeping system to separate hangar expense and income from the general budget, and look at any relation between hangar rentals and fuel sales. Geary says hangar rental brings $70,000 into the airport general budget each year.
The general kickoff for the 2015 Norfolk Area United Way campaign will be held Thursday at noon at the Time Square Event Center. Members of the Pacesetter Division have been working for more than a month to collect the majority of this year's $540,000 goal. Now other volunteers will begin the work of contacting businesses and donors to wrap up the campaign. Volunteers planning to attend are asked to call the United Way office at (402) 371-1040.
