The Cleveland Browns are making changes at running back, trading Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick in next year's draft. Richardson has struggled with injuries since being selected third overall in last year's draft following a standout career at Alabama. The Browns plan to bring in running back Willis McGahee for a physical.
Former heavyweight champion Ken Norton has died at age 70. A friend of the fighter says Norton had been in poor health for the last several years after suffering a series of strokes. Norton had three memorable fights against Muhammad Ali, winning the first while breaking his jaw in 1973.
Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman and athletic director Shawn Eichorst say they believe football coach Bo Pelini is sincere in his apology for a profane rant against fans two years ago and the university is ready to put the matter to rest. The joint statement released yesterday said former athletic director Tom Osborne was aware of the recording more than a year ago and addressed the matter with Pelini at the time. The statement said Pelini's demeanor has "significantly improved" since then and that Pelini understands the "seriousness and inappropriateness" of the comments. A recording of the rant was leaked to the Deadspin.com sports website this week.

Flooding in Colorado has brought concerns for Nebraska. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension State Climatologist Al Dutcher says there is a lot of uncertainty as to how much impact flooding along the South Platte will have on Nebraska. Dutcher says this excess water may improve the irrigation supply in Nebraska by filling up canals with water that can’t be stored or sent to the Missouri River. He says the rains that Colorado has experienced in the last week changed what had been the driest year on record in that state to the wettest.
House Republicans say they will not vote to keep funding the federal government past this month unless funding is stripped from the federal health care law, commonly known as Obamacare. Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer says she favors tying Obamacare funding to funding the federal government through the remainder of this year. Fischer also wants Congress to discuss the exemptions and delays granted by the Obama Administration. Congress hasn't approved a budget, so funding for the federal government expires at the end of September.
The city of Norfolk is applying for more than $400,000 in Community Development Block Grants to help repair some streets in the downtown area. At this week’s meeting, the City Council gave unanimous approval to a resolution to submit the grant application for additional funding available through the state. Public Works Director Dennis Smith says the grant funding, if approved, will be used to repair Prospect Avenue between 4th and 7th streets and 5th Street from Madison to Philip. The city is required to contribute one dollar for every two dollars of CDBG funding.
Phenomenal growth in the downtown Norfolk business district has created a parking problem. Crews are at work painting stripes in downtown parking lots and putting up new signs to designate customer, employee and resident parking areas. Connie Geary, president of the Vehicle Parking District, says the idea is to get employees and residents to park in designated lots, freeing up more parking spots for customers near the businesses where they shop. Customer parking will be limited to two hours. Downtown parking ordinances go into effect October 1st, and apply from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some portions of parking lots will be striped with blue paint and these are reserved 24 hours a day, seven days a week for downtown residents.
Free screenings, demonstrations and more will be offered Friday and Saturday during the Planned Approach to Community Health - or PATCH - Health Fair. A comprehensive blood screening will be offered both days for a cost of $40, and senior citizens can have the screening done for $20. Those planning to have their blood drawn should fast for eight to 12 hours, drink plenty of water and take their regular medications. Speakers will address topics like movement disorders, Alzheimer's education and stress management. Demonstrations of cooking, the insanity workout, tai chi and tae-kwan-do are on the agenda.
