The City Council has voted unanimously to restore stoplights at the intersections of Norfolk Avenue and 2nd and 3rd Streets. The lights have been covered since spring to evaluate if they are valuable enough to pay for upgrades. Councilmen Dale Coy and Jim Lange pointed out that having the lights inoperable for several months revealed a safety issue with students at downtown dance studios. Both Coy and Lange suggested that some further action be taken to deal with the situation. Lange urged parents to consider parking their vehicles and walking their children to and from dance class.
Stanton County District Judge James Kube sentenced a Stanton man Monday to more than 10 years in prison for two theft charges related to incidents that occurred in May. Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says 39-year-old Mark Kuehn was sentenced to three-to-five years on one count, and a consecutive 10 years on the second count. The second count also included a charge of being a habitual criminal, and that would require that Kuehn serve at least 11 years before being eligible for parole. Kuehn was arrested for thefts from two construction trailers on consecutive nights in Stanton. Unger says Kuehn still faces charges in Thurston and Cuming counties in connection with his escape from the Thurston County Jail in August.
A survey conducted by Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation is finding their membership unhappy with changes in health insurance. Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says more than 700 surveys have already been returned; and 75 percent of the respondents so far are reporting significantly higher costs for premiums and higher deductibles. And Nelson says those who have visited the on-line health insurance exchange say they have found either little coverage for low premiums, or 200-to-300-percent higher premiums for their current coverage. Nelson says members that did report a premium decrease say the deductible is two to three times higher than their current plan.
An honor flight for Nebraska's Korean War veterans is scheduled for October 29th. On that day, 136 veterans will be on a plane to Washington, D.C. to see memorials dedicated to their service. Bill Williams is the event organizer. He says no government shutdown will cancel this trip. Williams says he has heard that restrooms at some of the memorials have been closed; but he says no barricades will keep them from seeing the open air memorials, even if he has to bring a wire cutter along. Williams says a lot can happen in the next three weeks, and he is hoping that issues on Capitol Hill will be resolved so the monuments can reopen.
