Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning says he will undergo surgery today for colon cancer. Bruning said yesterday that he was optimistic the surgery would remove the cancer, but he won't know for sure until further tests are conducted to see whether it has spread. He says he believes it was caught early, and he doesn't think it will affect his re-election bid. Bruning says doctors will remove about eight inches of his colon and lymph nodes around the affected area. The 44-year-old says the cancer was discovered during a colonoscopy in November.
Gov. Dave Heineman has appointed a retired U.S. Air Force colonel to an open seat in the Nebraska Legislature, only days after his first pick withdrew amid questions about his nonpayment of campaign finance fines. Heineman announced yesterday his appointment of retired Col. Tommy L. Garrett, of Bellevue, to finish the term of former state Sen. Scott Price who resigned in November. Garrett, 59, is the founder and president of a Bellevue company that specializes in defense contracting. On Friday, Heineman had announced his appointment of Patrick M. Shannon, of Bellevue. Within hours, Shannon withdrew his name. The withdrawal followed news that Shannon owes the state $16,000 for campaign-disclosure violations during an unsuccessful bid for the Legislature in 2004.
Work is underway to find a new principal for Norfolk Senior High. At Monday's Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson said a survey will be posted on the school’s web site to elicit feedback from staff, parents and students regarding the characteristics they would like to see in the next high school principal. Thompson says advertising for the position will begin in January, with interviews in mid to late February. The person hired will replace James Lake, who resigned in October after just a little more than year with the district. Jake Luhr is serving as acting Senior High Principal.
The first of three days of State High School One-Act Play Championships is in the books. Two state champions were crowned yesterday at the Johnny Carson Theatre. Hyannis is a state champion in Class D-2. Bruning-Davenport took runner-up honors. Ewing tied Bruning-Davenport for second, but lost on a tie-breaker. Landon Jutten of Wauneta-Palisade and Brandi Bailey of Haynnis were named outstanding male and female performers. In Class D-1, Wausa is a state champion for a seventh time in eight years. Nearly the entire student body put on the play “Oz.” Paxton took runner-up honors. Wausa’s Trevor McQuay and Morgan Kumm were honored as Outstanding male and female performers.
The State One-Act Championships continue today. Class C-2 takes the stage during the morning session. Cross County (Stromsburg) is first up at 8:30, followed in 45-minute increments by Hemingford, Pawnee City, Hartington, Shelton and West Point Guardian Angels.
