A Nebraska Board of Education member is refusing to leave office despite a vote from his colleagues that called for his resignation after racist content appeared on his blog. The board voted 6-2 for member Pat McPherson to resign. Top elected officials have called on McPherson to step down in response to repeated comments on his blog that referred to President Barack Obama as a "half-breed." McPherson has disavowed the posts and said he did not write them. He read a statement saying he is not a racist, and will not allow the controversy to overturn an election. The resolution approved by the board says the "storm of attention and outrage" over the posting is likely to continue and distract from its mission.
Northeast Community College President Dr. Michael Chipps testified at the state capitol earlier this week, on Senator Al Davis’s LB144, that proposes to lower property taxes in several ways. Chipps says the part of the bill that most concerns him is the proposal to gradually lower the tax-levy authority for community colleges from 11.25 cents per hundred dollars of valuation to 6.25 cents over the next four fiscal years. Chipps says he'll continue to urge the legislature to go back to the original funding concept for community colleges, with 40 percent of revenue coming from property taxes, 40 percent from state funding, and 20 percent from tuition and fees.
Norfolk City Councilman Josh Moenning says, contrary to an assumption made by an Omaha World-Herald reporter, he continues to live in Norfolk. In an article about a position created in the Ricketts Administration for Moenning’s wife, Jessica, the World-Herald reported that the Moennings lived in Norfolk “until recently.” The story on the World-Herald online site has been changed to say that Josh Moenning continues to live in Norfolk. Josh Moenning told News Talk WJAG that he continues to live at 1202 West Norfolk Avenue and maintains an office in the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce building for the 4 Lanes 4 Nebraska group.
The Madison County Board of Commissioners has approved a lease to provide a day reporting center in Norfolk for at risk youth who are under the supervision of the Madison County Juvenile Accountability Unit. At Tuesday’s meeting, the board approved a lease for space in The Centrum at 4th Street and Braasch Avenue. County Attorney Joe Smith explained that the space would be used by several organizations that work with youth, including Norfolk Public Schools. Smith expects the program to be set up in about 10 days. He says that Diversion and the Juvenile Accountability Program will remain headquartered in his office in Madison, but some of their services might be provided in the new Norfolk facility.
