Justin Verlander came within three outs of his third career no-hitter while pitching Detroit past the Los Angeles Angels 5-0.  The gem ended when Chris Iannetta led off the top of the ninth with a double, but Verlander's one-hit shutout was more than enough to drop the Angels six games behind the American League West-leading Astros.

The Washington Redskins’ improved pass rush took a hit yesterday.  Outside linebacker Junior Galette sustained a torn Achilles, FOX Sports 1 confirmed.  The Redskins have not announced the results of Galette's MRI.  Galette, who was signed on a one-year deal this offseason after being unceremoniously cut by the New Orleans Saints, is entering his sixth season in the NFL.  He had ten sacks in New Orleans last season.  A left pectoral injury had kept the linebacker off the field so far this preseason.

News Briefs:

An organization campaigning to reinstate Nebraska's death penalty after lawmakers repealed it in May says it has collected more than enough signatures to place the issue before voters in 2016. Nebraskans for the Death Penalty announced Wednesday that it has gathered 166,692 signatures from all 93 of the state's counties. The group needed roughly 57,000 valid voter signatures to place the issue on the statewide general election ballot, and 114,000 to halt the death penalty repeal before the new law goes into effect on Sunday.

Now that the repeal of the death penalty in Nebraska is on hold until the general election of November 2016, Gov. Madison County Commissioners listened to a presentation Tuesday on a GPS system that would help keep track of the county’s fleet of vehicles. Analysts have been saying all summer, that gas prices at the pump should be dropping to near the $2 a gallon mark. But the current statewide average is $2.64 a gallon. Gas and oil industry expert David Taylor says the refinery problem in Indiana is keeping prices higher in the Midwest compared to other areas of the country. As of Thursday in Norfolk, a gallon of unleaded is $2.39.
