News Briefs:

About 125 workers have been told they'll be losing their jobs when a meat plant closes in West Point. On Thursday Land O' Frost told employees that production will continue into the second quarter of the year at the former Wimmer's plant, giving them time to find other jobs. The Munster, Indiana-based company says workers will be eligible to apply for jobs at other Land O'Frost locations. Land O'Frost President and CEO David VanEekeren says the consolidation of production at other company plants will help Land O'Frost operate more competitively.

You can take the word “draft” out of the elementary growth plans posted on the Norfolk Public Schools website. At a meeting Thursday, the board authorized Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson to go ahead with the plan. Thompson says the boundary adjustments are necessary because some neighborhood schools have more students than they can hold, while others have space for more students.  Thompson stresses that the district is not out of room for students, it just needs to adjust the boundaries so the distribution of students is more even across the district. Thompson also says no current student will be moved to another building. The boundary changes will only impact incoming kindergarteners and other new students.

If more snow falls in this area before the end of winter, Madison County District One will be better prepared to deal with it. At this week’s meeting of the County Board, Commissioner Ron Schmidt recommended acceptance of a $45,100 bid from Twin States Farm in Le Center, Minn. for a used truck with a plow. The 2006 International has 147,500 miles on it.  The commissioners voted unanimously to accept the bid. This truck will replace one that was taken off the roads in late January and deemed unsuitable for repair. At the time, the board discussed making an emergency purchase, but decided instead to go through the bidding process.

People calling 911 for an emergency need to understand that 911-technology has not yet caught up with all the phone options available. Norfolk Police Captain Mike Bauer says those calling from a traditional landline can be located immediately, but the technology is not available for cell and Voice Over Internet Protocol phones. Bauer says it is sometimes possible to track the location of a cell caller – but not consistently. Bauer recommends that anyone calling 911 stay on the phone as long as possible to relay information to the 911 staff. And he says if you have a choice, use your landline  to call for assistance, not your cell phone.

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts has signed a bill designed to keep the state's cigar bars in business. The new law approved Thursday authorizes cigar smoking in licensed establishments. It was introduced after the Nebraska Supreme Court struck down a 2009 law that allowed patrons to smoke cigars in cigar bars and shops. Before the August ruling, indoor smoking was allowed in cigar bars, hotel guest rooms and tobacco-only retailers. The law by Sen. Tyson Larson of O'Neill makes clear that state lawmakers intended to create a legal exemption for those establishments.
