News Briefs:

Authorities say a man accused of shooting a Sioux City police officer has been captured in Texas. Police announced on Saturday that 21-year-old Jamal Dean was arrested without incident during a traffic stop in Riviera, Texas. Several agencies learned on Friday that Dean may be in Texas. They believe he was headed to the border between the United States and Mexico. He was stopped in a Dodge Durango going south on Highway 77. The manhunt for Dean began Monday. He is accused of firing several shots from a rifle at Officer Kevin McCormick during a routine traffic stop. The hunt spread to Omaha, but it turned up nothing. McCormick, who was shot in the forehead, is expected to make a full recovery.

2013 marks the YMCA’s 100th year in Norfolk and Y officials are celebrating. The current YMCA on Benjamin Avenue opened its doors in 1981. The original YMCA sat across from the McMill Building on south 4th Street in an area that today is a parking lot. The Y’s Marketing Director, Barb Preusker says open houses are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 to 1:30. Then a big celebration is scheduled for Thursday evening from 6 to 8 with hot dogs, root beer floats and bouncy houses.

What do you know about H2O? Most of us take clean drinking water for granted, but the process of getting quality water to your tap is anything but routine. This is National “Drinking Water Week” and the Norfolk Water Division invites you to its open house Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 6 at the West Water Plant: 300 South 49th Street. In addition, Mayor Sue Fuchtman will proclaim this first full week of May as "Drinking Water Week."

A fight for Nebraska school-aid dollars was driven by large districts that have dwindling options to generate local revenue and small districts that pay more per-student for transportation and teachers. Both sides won concessions, even though the tentative funding formula steers most of state aid to Nebraska's largest schools. The largest schools around Omaha and Lincoln complained about flat-lined property values and larger student enrollments. Smaller schools worried about competing for teachers with Omaha, Lincoln and border states. Of Nebraska's 249 public districts, 114 will receive no equalization aid under the proposed funding formula. Those districts account for about 13 percent of students statewide. The bill has won tentative approval from lawmakers but hasn't cleared the Legislature. It's scheduled for a second vote as early as Tuesday.

The husband of Nebraska's only female former governor, Bill Orr, has died at the age of 78. Orr's son and grandson said he died at home in Lincoln early Sunday. The retired Woodmen of the World executive is remembered for the way he embraced the role of first gentleman when his wife, Kay Orr, served as governor from 1987 to 1991. Bill Orr even published a First Gentleman's Cookbook with his own recipes and contributions from Warren Buffett, Johnny Carson, Tom Osborne and actress Katharine Hepburn.
