News Briefs:

The 2013 Viaero Great American Comedy Festival kicks off tonight with a dinner show featuring amateur comedians and a comedy-magic show later in the evening. The festival is a tribute to Johnny Carson, who grew up in Norfolk and went on to become the “king of late night.” Drew Carey will host the finals of this year’s competition on Saturday night. He told NewsTalk WJAG he remembers every minute of his first appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Carson invited Carey to join him on the couch – and Carey says that two minutes changed his life. The Saturday night show is sold out, but tickets remain for both shows tonight, semi-finals tomorrow and Friday, late-night sets Thursday and Friday at Divots, and the Sunday Christian comedy show. Tickets can be purchased online at greatamericancomedyfestival.com or at Insurance Associates on West Pasewalk Avenue.

Officials at Mercy Medical Center have upgraded the condition of a Norfolk man, injured in a car-motorcycle accident Sunday, from serious to fair condition. Twenty-two-year-old Austin Kallhoff was driving his motorcycle southeast-bound on the Highway 275 bypass Sunday at around 8 p.m., when he collided with a car driven by 43-year-old Kathy Goger of Stanton. Norfolk Police say Goger was trying to turn left onto the bypass and that the setting sun likely played a role in the accident. Kallhoff was flown via Life Flight helicopter to the Sioux City hospital. Goger and her passenger were both treated and released from Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Four cities have submitted bids for a new Nebraska veterans home, including one pledge of more than $10 million. State officials confirmed that they have received proposals from Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney and North Platte as of the Tuesday deadline. The Kearney City Council voted Tuesday to commit $8.5 million in direct funding and utility cost reductions for the project, in addition to $1 million approved by Buffalo County officials, $100,000 from an economic development group, and $500,000 promised by a veterans' memorial committee. The cities are competing for a $121 million project to replace an outdated, 225-bed facility in Grand Island. Grand Island has promised at least $3.3 million, and North Platte has committed at least $4 million. City officials in Hastings declined Tuesday to disclose their bid.

Gov. Dave Heineman says he hopes to have a new adjutant general in place for the Nebraska National Guard by mid-July. Heineman said Tuesday that a screening panel will likely name two to four finalists for the job by the end of June, so the change-of-command can be made in July. The chosen finalist will replace outgoing Maj. Gen. Judd Lyons, who is taking a new job as deputy director of the U.S. Army National Guard in Arlington, Va. The 50-year-old Lyons is Nebraska's 32nd adjutant general. He assumed command of the Nebraska National Guard in August 2009. The adjutant general serves as the senior uniformed officer responsible for leading nearly 4,700 Army and Air National Guard personnel in Nebraska. The position is part of the governor's cabinet.
