Andrew Shaw scored on a deflection at 12:08 of triple-overtime to complete the Chicago Blackhawks' comeback in a 4-3 win over Boston in Game One of the Stanley Cup finals.  The Bruins led 3-1 until Dave Bolland and Johnny Oduya scored in the third period. Corey Crawford turned back 51 shots in the fifth-longest Stanley Cup finals game ever.

Jason Kidd is back with the Nets, this time as head coach.  Kidd retired earlier this month after one season with the New York Knicks, his 19th in the NBA.  He spent 6 ½ seasons with the Nets, averaging 14.6 points, 9.1 assists and 7.2 rebounds while leading them to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003.

NASCAR driver Jason Leffler has died following an accident last night during a dirt car event at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey.  The 37-year-old Leffler was a two-time winner on the Nationwide Series and finished last at Pocono over the weekend, his first Sprint Cup start of the year.

Ndamukong Suh says he wants to lead the Detroit Lions with his actions and mouth.  The former Nebraska Cornhusker seems to be doing that, going to the front of the line for drills and shouting words of encouragement to his fellow defensive linemen.  In Suh's first three seasons, he deferred leadership roles to veterans Kyle Vanden Bosch, Corey Williams and Cliff Avril.  Those three defensive linemen are gone, leaving Suh with a chance to lead.  Detroit defensive end Willie Young has seen Suh take advantage of the opportunity during this week's minicamp.  Suh says his path to leadership at Nebraska followed a similar path.  He spoke up rarely in his first two years before becoming a vocal leader as a junior and senior for the Cornhuskers.

News Briefs:

The 6th Annual Viaero Great American Comedy Festival got underway Wednesday night with the annual amateur comedians competition at the Divots Conference Center. The winner was a cancer survivor from Denver, Leif Cedar who was awarded $500 for his victory and a consultation with Late Show With David Letterman talent coordinator and warm-up comedian Eddie Brill. The first night also featured a magic show at the Johnny Carson Theater. The Viaero Great American Comedy Festival continues Thursday with the first round of the professional comedians competition beginning at 7:30 at the Johnny Carson Theater. The top performers will advance to Saturday’s finals which will be hosted by Drew Carey, who will also present Steven Wright with the Johnny Carson Comedy Legend Award. Tickets for most of the performances are still available on-line at and at Insurance Associates, 1900 W. Pasewalk Ave. in Norfolk.

Making the tough decisions, that was the action most praised as members of the Norfolk Public School Board and staff said goodbye to Superintendent Dr. Marlene Uhing. Uhing is retiring July 1st after six years with the district. During that time, the Norfolk schools have seen steadily decreasing state and federal support. Uhing attended her final regular Norfolk School Board meeting Monday night. School Board President Brad Krivohlavek wished her well in the future, commenting that being a superintendent is a very difficult job. Dr. Jami Jo Thompson was selected to succeed Uhing.

Kids who depend on school lunch programs sometimes go hungry during the summer. Norfolk’s Salvation Army is addressing that problem with its Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:15 at Central Park. Salvation Army Captain R.C. Duskin says volunteers are needed and food donations are always welcome, especially meat products. The Salvation Army’s Food Kitchen is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 to 12:30. For more information, you can stop by the Salvation Army at 112 North 7th Street or give them a call at (402) 379-4663.

Nebraska is awarding $1.93 million in grants to support more than 100 tire recycling and cleanup projects throughout the state. Department of Environmental Quality director Mike Linder says the grant money comes from a $1 fee for every new tire purchased in Nebraska. Nebraska residents generate more than 1.5 million scrap tires each year, according to the department. The grants will reimburse individuals, groups and local governments for crumb rubber purchases. Linder says they will prevent public health and environmental problems by eliminating tire piles.

Picnics and barbecues are a lot of fun, but there is nothing fun about contracting a food-borne illness at a summer event. Registered Dietician Vicki Brown with Faith Regional Health Services says it is important to keep the cold foods cold, and the hot foods hot. She reminds barbecue chefs to NOT put the cooked meat on the same tray used to hold the raw product, and to be careful about cross-contamination of fruits and vegetables with cutting boards and other utensils used to handle raw meat.
