The San Antonio Spurs have a 3-2 lead in the NBA Finals after Tony Parker scored a game-high 26 points and Manu Ginobili added 24 in a 114-104 triumph against the Miami Heat.  Danny Green also scored 24 points and broke Ray Allen's record for most three-pointers made in a final series.  Dwyane Wade and LeBron James each had a team-high 25 points for the Heat but shot a combined 18-44.

Justin Rose has become the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970.  Rose closed with an even-par 70 for a one-over total, two strokes ahead of third-round leader Phil Mickelson and Jason Day.  Mickelson carried a one-stroke lead into the final round before posting his sixth U.S. Open runner-up finish, extending his record.

North Carolina State's Carlos Rodon pitched eight shutout innings to lead the Wolfpack to an 8-1 win over ACC rival North Carolina at the College World Series in Omaha.  Rodon held the top national seed Tar Heels hitless into the fifth inning.  Next up for NC State is UCLA, which held off LSU 2-1.  Adam Plutko and two relievers limited LSU to five hits, and UCLA turned both of the Tigers’ errors into runs in the sixth and eighth innings.  Today’s games at TD Ameritrade Park have Oregon State meeting Louisville in a 2:00 elimination game and Mississippi State playing Indiana at 7:00 in the winner’s bracket.

Wayne State College Director of Athletics Mike Powicki announced Saturday that head men’s basketball coach Paul Combs has resigned his position at the school and accepted the head men’s basketball position at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin.  Combs spent four seasons as head coach at Wayne State, compiling a 54-58 overall record and a 39-47 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  He led the Wildcats this past season to a 17-12 record, going 11-11 in the NSIC.  It was the first winning season for the Wildcats since the 2007-08 campaign and the 17 wins were the most by a Wayne State men’s basketball team since the 1999-2000 season when WSC went 26-6 in Greg McDermott’s final season with the Wildcats.  Wayne State has now moved their focus to a national search for their next head men’s basketball coach.

News Briefs:

For the sixth consecutive year, some of the nation’s most talented comedians made their way past Northeast Nebraska’s cornfields to take part in a prestigious competition in honor of Norfolk’s favorite son. Nearly 1,300 people packed into the Johnny Carson Theater for the finals of the professional comedians competition of the 6th Annual Viaero Great American Comedy Festival.  Carson’s good friend and talent coordinator for the Late Show with David Letterman, Eddie Brill auditioned nearly 1,000 performers from coast-to-coast and invited 20 to Norfolk. Following semifinal competitions Thursday and Friday, the eight finalists took the stage Saturday. Price is Right host Drew Carey served as emcee. He says his first appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson changed his life. The Saturday show also featured the annual presentation of the Johnny Carson Comedy Legend Award to Steven Wright. Brill interviewed Wright Tonight Show style and recounted how Wright, in 1982 appeared on the Tonight Show, and became the only comedian to ever be asked back to the show less than a week later. The winner of the professional comedians competition, Denver comedian Phil Palisoul will host the semifinal rounds of the 7th Annual Viaero Great American Comedy Festival next year.

The Nebraska Supreme Court has refused to grant a new trial for the man accused of kidnapping a 9-year-old Norfolk girl in 1987. David Phelps was convicted of kidnapping Jill Cutshall, but has maintained his innocence, and several times appealed his conviction. In the latest filing, Phelps said a diary that came to light in a 2012 Valley County case provided new evidence, and he asked for a new trial. The diary, thought by prosecutors in the Valley County case to be a fake, contained stories of the abduction, rape and murder of four women, including one referred to as “Jill Dee.” The state high court ruled that the diary was not enough evidence to reopen the case. In a 6-0 decision, the court said too much time had passed since Phelps’ conviction for newly discovered evidence to merit a new trial. In the written ruling, Judge Kenneth Stephan said the allegations about the diary fall far short of the level needed to reopen the case, and he referred to Phelps’ allegations as “speculative.”

The Mayor and City Council will be holding a “Coffee with the Council” after the Monday, June 17th City Council meeting, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 309 N. 5th Street. The Mayor and one councilman from each ward of the city will be present at the coffee to visit with citizens.

Restitution of more than $35,000 is part of a plea deal reached in a Wayne County case involving employee theft from a Wayne dentist. Thirty-six-year-old Mandi Fernau of Carroll has agreed to pay back $36,686 she stole from Burrows and Holloway Family Dentistry. She has already paid back $10,000 of that amount. Fernau will be sentenced August 7th for attempted theft by unlawful taking and second degree forgery. Both are felonies. In exchange for the full restitution, prosecutors have agreed to file no further charges in the case and to recommend probation.
