The Boston Bruins have a two-games-to-one lead in the Stanley Cup finals after Tuukka Rask handled 28 shots in a 2-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Daniel Paille scored the winning goal for the second straight game, beating Corey Crawford at 2:13 of the second period. Patrice Bergeron also had a second-period goal to support Rask's third shutout of the post season.
Oregon State stayed alive in the College World Series in Omaha by scoring seven times in the fourth inning of an 11-4 romp over Louisville. Max Gordon had two hits and two RBIs out of the ninth spot in the lineup as the Beavers eliminated the Cardinals. The second game had Mississippi State beating Indiana 5-3. Trey Porter drove in the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State needs one win to reach next week’s best-of-three finals. Today's games at TD Ameritrade Park have North Carolina meeting LSU in a 2:00 elimination game and North Carolina State playing UCLA at 7:00 in the winner's bracket.
Kayla Knopik of Papillion conquered quick greens in the first round of the 2013 Nebraska Women’s Amateur Golf Association State Amateur at The Pines Country Club. The 2011 Champion carded a 73 and leads all competitors by at least three strokes. In second place with a 76 is Abbie Hunke from Snyder. Stroke Play Tournament Champion Danielle Lemek is tied for third with Isabella Baldacci of Norfolk, both carding a 77.
The Nebraska School Activities Association has announced the final standings for The U.S. Cellular Cup, which is the NSAA All-Activities Award for Nebraska high schools. In the overall standings, Kearney Catholic claimed Class ‘C’ by 37.5 points. Columbus Scotus finished second, Crofton took third, and Norfolk Catholic was fifth. O’Neill St. Mary’s won Class ‘D’ by 50 points. Hartington High finished second and West Point Guardian Angels took third. The girls division winners included Columbus Scotus (C), & West Point Guardian Angels (D). The boys division winners included Hartington High (D).

At last night’s meeting of the Norfolk City Council, Mayor Sue Fuchtman reappointed the city’s clerk, treasurer, engineer, attorney and administrator. That action has traditionally been part of a mayor's first duties after taking office in January, but Mayor Fuchtman told the council that after being elected for the first time, she wasn't ready to do that right away, so with the recommendation of staff, she moved the time frame for that action to June. The council unanimously approved all of the mayor's reappointments.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman says the Lincoln campus needs to grow. Perlman told business leaders in Lincoln that plans call for the campus of nearly 25,000 to 30,000 in order to stay competitive in the Big Ten and to attract more talented students. Nebraska is the smallest of the public universities in the Big Ten Conference. The master plan for growth targets student amenities as well as academics.
The Nebraska corn crop is faring far better than some other states including neighboring Iowa with 75 percent of the crop in good or excellent condition. Just 2 percent is rated poor. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says in its weekly crop report released Monday that Nebraska's corn is 100 percent emerged in line with the normal average. In Iowa where soggy fields have hampered planting, 12 percent of the crop is in poor condition, worse among the 18 leading corn growing states, 4 percent is very poor and 6 percent hasn't been planted yet. Nebraska's soybeans are 77 percent good or excellent, 21 percent fair and just 2 percent poor. Ninety percent has emerged, which is near average.
State Senator Steve Lathrop is kicking off his statewide listening tour as he weighs a run for governor. Lathrop announced that he will visit Plattsmouth today. The stop is the first of nearly 20 planned visits to communities throughout the state. Lathrop, a Democrat, has said he is seriously considering a run for governor in the 2014 election. Current Republican Gov. Dave Heineman is ineligible to run again because of term limits. Lathrop says the stops will focus on local economic growth and job creation. Lathrop represents an Omaha legislative district that includes Ralston and Millard.
Area citizens are being urged to ride their bikes to work Friday, Bike to Work Day. Those biking Friday are encouraged to stop by the BankFirst parking lot at 13tgh Street and Norfolk Avenue for snacks, drinks, prizes and discounts on registration for the 7 Cities Century Bike Ride in August. The business or organization with the most riders who stop by BankFirst Friday morning will receive $10 off each registration for the 7 Cities Century Ride. Those who register by June 22nd will also be eligible to win a pair of tickets to the Divots concerts featuring Hairball June 28th, Brett Michaels and Vince Neil on June 29th and Skillet on July 28th.
