News Briefs:

The U.S. House of Representatives has failed to pass a farm bill. The final vote on the 2013 Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act was 195-234. Nebraska First District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry tells us that farm policy and agriculture are not well understood in Washington. Third District Congressman Adrian Smith says he's very disappointed. Smith says the battle over food stamps sunk the bill, with some Republicans claiming cuts to the program didn't go far enough and some Democrats saying they went too far.

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel says President Obama's call to reduce the country's nuclear arsenal by a third comes after two years of study. Hagel told an audience at the University of Nebraska-Omaha that STRATCOM leaders at Offutt Air Force Base participated in the study of the size and mission of the country's nuclear forces. Hagel says he strongly supports the president. At a speech in Berlin earlier this week, Obama stated that he would enter negotiations with Russia to reduce the nuclear stockpile both countries maintain.

Hagel also signaled that U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base will be around for a long time, even as the Department of Defense calls for base closings around the country. Hagel said Thursday at a ceremony to honor StratCom personnel that the command is central to dealing with the new threats facing the country. Earlier Thursday, Hagel was briefed on the capabilities of the command, which oversees the nation's nuclear arsenal and has many strategic missions. The trip to Nebraska is Hagel's first since being confirmed as defense secretary in February.

Auwarter says Faith Regional is the number three hospital in the state for joint replacement. Healthgrades has also awarded Faith Regional a five-star rating for patient experiences.

Though many are recovered quickly, each year in America, an estimated 800,000 children are reported missing. If that should happen to your child, having a pre-packaged set of information about your child to hand to law enforcement could go a long way toward helping authorities find them. The consumer financial services firm Check N’ Go is teaming up with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to hand out free Child ID kits Saturday at Wal-Mart from 9 to 3. Check N' Go officials will take photos of children and get their finger prints. The kit also contains information you can share with  your children.
