Senator Chambers: Nebraska tax study not needed

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Sen. Ernie Chambers has argued for months that lawmakers don't need a law to study Nebraska's tax climate, and he's presenting an alternative.  The longtime state senator pitched a resolution Wednesday to the Legislature's Executive Board, which he says would accomplish the same goal as a tax-study bill now pending in the Legislature.  Lawmakers have given first-round approval to the measure, which would create a Tax Modernization Commission. The idea gained some prominence after an earlier plan to eliminate or reduce Nebraska's income tax was scrapped.  Chambers says lawmakers have created special committees in the past without passing laws. He says resolutions are easier to change and extend than bills, which require committee hearings.
