Even with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade out with minor injuries and Chris Bosh home with flu-like symptoms, Ray Allen scored 23 points and the Heat's B-squad assured Miami of having home-court advantage throughout the playoffs by clinching the best record in the NBA with a 103-98 victory over the Washington Wizards.  Miami assured itself of having a better record than San Antonio, the top team in the Western Conference.

Kobe Bryant scored a season-high 47 points and the Los Angeles Lakers pulled closer to a playoff berth with a 113-106 victory over the short-handed Portland Trail Blazers last night.  Bryant also had eight rebounds, five assists, four blocked shots, and three steals.  The Lakers moved a game up on the Utah Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.  Portland rookie Damian Lillard led the Blazers with a career-high 38 points.  Pau Gasol had 23 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, while Dwight Howard added 20 points and ten rebounds for the Lakers.  Bryant was 18-18 from the free throw line.
 
Davidson and Massachusetts will complete the eight-team field for the 2013 Charleston Men’s Basketball Classic set for Nov. 21-24 at TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina.  The other six teams, previously announced, were Clemson, Georgia, New Mexico, Nebraska, Temple and UAB.  The Charleston Classic is the first of three ESPN-sponsored events for Nebraska in the coming years.  During the 2014-15 season, the Huskers will compete in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu and the Anaheim Classic in 2015-16.  The 2013 Charleston Classic, will feature a bracket format with twelve games over three days.

The Nebraska women's basketball team finished the season ranked 18th in the final coaches poll.  The Huskers closed the season with their second trip to the Sweet 16 in the last four years.  The Huskers finished 24th in the final Associated Press poll, which was announced at the conclusion of the regular season.  Nebraska’s final mark is 25-9 overall and 12-4 in the Big Ten.

The Nebraska volleyball team landed their first commit to the Class of 2015.  Kenzie Maloney, a defensive specialist/libero from Louisville, Ky., committed to Nebraska on Tuesday according to the Omaha World Herald.  Maloney, who will be a high school junior this fall, plays for national power Assumption High School, which finished the 2012 season 41-2, won its third straight state championship and ended the season ranked fifth nationally by PrepVolleyball.com.  Maloney also had offers from Louisville, Kentucky and Auburn.  Nebraska also has a commitment from Lincoln Pius X defensive specialist Sydney Townsend for the Class of 2014.

Joe Torre says his experience as manager of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic has convinced him that the sport belongs in the Olympics.  Baseball has been out of the Olympics since 2008.  Baseball and softball are making a consolidated effort to return to the Games in 2020.  Torre said last night in La Vista, that the success of the WBC reflects the popularity of baseball at the international level.  Torre is a Major League Baseball executive vice president.  He was in the Omaha suburb of La Vista for a banquet celebrating the unveiling of a statue of his former St. Louis Cardinals teammate Bob Gibson.  Gibson is from Omaha.  The statue is at Werner Park, the home stadium of the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers.

This weekend's Wayne State at Minnesota Duluth four-game baseball NSIC series has been moved to Wayne due to poor weather conditions in Duluth.  Doubleheaders are scheduled to start Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 each day at the Pete Chapman Complex.  The Wildcats are currently third place in the NSIC standings with an 8-2 league mark and are 16-8 overall.

The Southwest Minnesota State at Wayne State NSIC softball doubleheader scheduled for Thursday at 2:00 at the Pete Chapman Complex has been canceled due to the weather.  The next scheduled action for the Wildcats will be this weekend when Wayne State hosts St. Cloud State Saturday and Minnesota Duluth Sunday with doubleheaders set to begin at 12:00 each day.

The Omaha World Herald & Lincoln Journal Star has updated their high school soccer rankings.  In the boys rankings, in the Omaha World Herald, Omaha South is the new number one in the “Nebraska Top 10” & Class “A”.  In Class “B”, Omaha Skutt stays at number one, Schuyler jumps from third to second, Columbus moves up from eighth to seventh, and Columbus Scotus improves from tenth to ninth.  In the Lincoln Journal Star boys rankings, Omaha South is the new number one in Class “A”.  In Class “B”, Omaha Skutt stays at number one, Schuyler jumps from fourth to third, Columbus remains seventh, and Columbus Scotus enters the rankings at number ten.  In the Omaha World Herald girls rankings, Omaha Marian remains number one in the “Nebraska Top 10” & Class “A”.  In Class “B”, Omaha Skutt stays at number one, Columbus Scotus is once again fourth, and Columbus drops out of the top ten.  In the Lincoln Journal Star girls rankings, Omaha Marian is once again first in Class “A”.  In Class “B”, Omaha Skutt stays at number one, Columbus Scotus remains fifth, and Columbus falls out of the top ten.
