Tim Pernetti has resigned as Rutgers athletic director, two days after the basketball coach he hired was dismissed for abusive behavior during practices. In a letter of resignation sent to the university president, Pernetti said he hoped that his tenure at Rutgers "will not be judged by this one incident."

Forward Deshaun Thomas will forego his final season of eligibility at Ohio State and enter the NBA draft. Thomas finishes his Buckeyes career ninth on the school's all-time scoring list. He averaged 19.8 points and 5.9 rebounds this season as the Buckeyes landed in the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament.

Billy Horschel is the leader at the midway point of the Texas Open. Horschel carded a 4-under 68 for an 8-under total, two shots ahead of Charley Hoffman, Daniel Summerhays and Steven Bowditch. Rory McIlroy is in the mix at 5-under in the final tuneup before the Masters.

Jimmie Johnson will start from the pole for tomorrow's Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway. Johnson made his fastest lap at 98.400 mph during qualifying yesterday, leading a parade of six drivers who broke Tony Stewart's track record speed of 98.083 mph. Marco Ambrose was second, followed by Brian Vickers, Joey Logano, Kasey Kahne (kayn) and Jeff Gordon.

The Denver Nuggets will be without versatile forward Danilo Gallinari for the rest of the season after tearing his left ACL in Thursday's game against Dallas. The 24-year-old Gallinari averaged 16.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 71 games this season for Denver, which has clinched a playoff berth.
