The Los Angeles Angels are going to be without Garrett Richards for their playoff run.  One of the American League West leader's top starters sustained a serious knee injury, tearing his left patellar tendon Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.  He's scheduled for surgery next week.  Richards was 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA this year.  It's a serious blow to the Angels, who also lost starter Tyler Skaggs to Tommy John surgery earlier this season.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have secured the final piece they were looking for in a blockbuster Kevin Love trade.  A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that the Timberwolves will receive Philadelphia 76ers power forward Thaddeus Young as part of the deal that will send Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers.  The Wolves agreed weeks ago to send Love to team up with LeBron James in Cleveland.  Minnesota will also get Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett in the deal, which cannot be completed until Saturday, 30 days after Wiggins signed his rookie contract.  The Sixers will get Alexey Shved and Luc Mbah a Moute from Minnesota and a 2015 first-round draft choice from Cleveland.

The Nebraska men’s basketball schedule has been released.  After starting Big Ten play the past two seasons with four of the first six games on the road, the Huskers will play four of the first six in 2014-15 at home.  The league opener is New Year’s Eve at Pinnacle Bank Arena against Indiana.  The first Big Ten road game is Jan. 5 at Iowa.  Nebraska returns all five starters from a 19-13 team that reached the NCAA tournament for the first time in 16 years.  In nonconference play, NU will meet 2014 NCAA tourney teams Creighton and Cincinnati at home, along with Central Arkansas, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Tennessee-Martin and Incarnate Word.  The season opener will be Nov. 16 at home.  The opponent is expected to be Northern Kentucky out of the Atlantic Sun Conference, though contracts are still being finalized.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will face a loaded 18-game Big Ten Conference regular season, including marquee home matchups with 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Maryland, Penn State, Purdue and Iowa.  The schedule announcement came from the Big Ten Conference yesterday, and included the unveiling of both the men’s and women’s conference schedules for the 2014-15 season.  Nebraska tips off the Big Ten Conference season on the road at Minnesota on Dec. 29.  The Huskers open home Big Ten action against first-year conference member Maryland on Jan. 3.  The regular-season should prepare Nebraska well to defend its 2014 Big Ten Tournament championship, March 4-8, at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The Nebraska-Omaha volleyball team was picked to finish ninth in the 2014 Summit League Preseason Poll.  Denver was tabbed as the preseason favorite after finishing runner-up in both the regular season and at the league tournament a year ago.  UNO returns ten letter winners and five starters from its 2013 squad.  Head coach Rose Shires, the winningest coach in Maverick volleyball history, enters her 25th year at the helm of the program and carries a career record of 442-311.
