Ryan Palmer, Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell are the first-round co-leaders after the first round of the PGA Championship, the final major of the PGA Tour season. All shot 6-under 65s. Palmer had the lead to himself at 7-under before a bogey on the par 3 eighth, which was his 17th hole, dropped him into the tie. The 41-year old Westwood has never won a major championship in an otherwise distinguished career. He had nine birdies on the day for this best score ever in the PGA. Chappell has yet to win on the PGA Tour in four seasons. British Open champ Rory McIlroy, Jim Furyk, Henrik Stenson and Edoardo Molinari each shot 66 and are lurking just one off the lead. Tiger Woods struggled with his game and shot 74. Playing partner Phil Mickelson turned in a 2-under 69. Defending champion Jason Dufner withdrew from the tournament after 10 holes due to neck pain. He was 8-over.
Nebraska defensive back Charles Jackson will undergo season-ending surgery on his left knee. Coach Bo Pelini announced Thursday night that Jackson sustained ligament damage when he was injured in practice on Tuesday. Jackson was projected to be the starter at the nickel position. The junior from Spring, Texas, played in all 13 games last season on special teams and as a backup safety. Pelini said Jackson will use his redshirt this season and have two years of eligibility remaining. Pelini said junior Byerson Cockrell and freshmen Josh Kalu and Trai Mosley would compete for playing time at nickel.
It won't be long before LeBron James has a new All-Star teammate with him on the Cavaliers. Minnesota and Cleveland have agreed in principle to a trade that will send Kevin Love to the Cavaliers for Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a first-round draft pick, two people with knowledge of the deal have told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because no official agreement can be reached until Aug. 23, when Wiggins, this year's No. 1 overall draft pick, becomes eligible to be traded. By that point, the deal could be expanded to include a third team, according to one of the people familiar with the talks. The Timberwolves have had discussions with the Philadelphia 76ers about acquiring forward Thaddeus Young to help fill Love's shoes. In other NBA news, Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant has withdrawn from the U.S. national team, dealing yet another blow to the weakening American team. The NBA's MVP has informed USA Basketball that he is mentally and physically drained from the season. His withdrawal comes less than a week after Indiana's Paul George was lost to a broken right leg.
