A person familiar with the situation says quarterback Tim Tebow will sign with the New England Patriots and join their minicamp today. Tebow spent last season with the New York Jets and was released in April after barely playing behind struggling starter Mark Sanchez.
Lionel Hollins says the Memphis Grizzlies have told him they will not renew his contract. Hollins took over midway through the 2008-09 season and led the team to the last three post seasons. He went 214-201 as the Grizzlies' head coach, including a 143-87 mark over the last three years.
Georgetown assistant men's basketball coach Kenya Hunter will be joining coach Tim Miles' staff at Nebraska. Nebraska announced the hiring yesterday. Hunter helped John Thompson III guide Georgetown to Big East titles in 2008 and 2013 and to five NCAA tournament appearances in the past six years. Hunter also spent much of his time recruiting for the Hoyas. Three of Georgetown's recruiting classes he helped develop were among the top 25 nationally, including eleven players who were ranked in the top 100 nationally by either ESPN.com or Rivals.com. Before joining Georgetown, Hunter spent three years as an assistant at Xavier, four years as director of basketball operations for North Carolina State and two years as an assistant coach at Duquesne. Hunter played point guard for Duquesne from 1993-1996.
Seven teams have now nailed down a position in the College World Series. Oregon State and Mississippi State joined Indiana, North Carolina State, Louisville, LSU, and UCLA after earning wins yesterday in Super Regional action. North Carolina will take on South Carolina at 11:00 today after inclement weather postponed yesterday's game. The College World Series starts on Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
Lutheran High Northeast has named Norfolk Catholic assistant coach Josh Clark as head boys basketball coach. Clark was an assistant under Knights coach Shane Anderson since 2008-2009. During that span, Norfolk Catholic recorded a 100-28 record and a state championship in 2010-2011. Clark replaces Greg Rathke as head coach who just completed his 13th year. Last year's Lutheran High Northeast squad finished 21-6 and lost in the opening round of the State Tournament to eventual state champion Southern Valley. The coaching change is the third in the last month for the Eagles as girls basketball coach Shannon Pospisil resigned and was replaced by Darin Suckstorf. The school had also announced that wrestling coach Henry Aschoff resigned and former Lutheran High Northeast wrestler Jesse Peters accepted the coaching position.
Northeast Community College in Norfolk will host the 30th Annual Northeast Nebraska High School All-Star Classic basketball games on Friday. Tip-off time for the girls' game is 6:00 while the boys will tip off at 8:00 in the Cox Activities Center gym. Members of the Girls 'Light' Team, include Norfolk Catholic's Michaela Barry & Amy Miller, Lutheran High Northeast's Mandi Uecker, Crofton's Bridget Arens, Hartington Cedar Catholic's Katelyn Dickes, South Sioux City's Morgan Hansen, Valentine's Allie Millard, Makenzie Polacek of Howells/Dodge, and Rachel Wiedenfeld & Krystina Koepke of Pierce. The team will be coached by Darren Sindelar of Pierce and Pender's Larry Ballinger. Members of the Girls 'Dark' Team include Norfolk High's Bre Hagedorn, Emerson/Hubbard's Marisa Blanke, Madison's Alayna Daberkow, Randolph's Kirsten Fink, Humphrey High's Alyssa Frauendorfer, Osmond's Carissa Gutz & Laurel Krohn, Wynot's Ashley Heine, Elgin Pubic/Pope John's Chelsi Mescher, & West Point Guardian Angels' Abby Ortmeier. The team will be coached by Elgin Pubic/Pope John's Randy Eisenhauer & Randolph's Theresa Schnoor.
